Rekeying your locks often makes more sense than changing your locks. When you rekey, you change the old key and create a new key. In rekeying a lock, the locksmith removes the pins and springs in the lock cylinder and replaces them with new pins and springs that work with a new and different key. Rekeying a lock is normally a lower cost than replacing the lock.
Why Rekeying is a good safety Choice.
It’s easy to forget how many keys you made and who has the keys. Rekey when any of the following situations arise:
- If you had a purse stolen or lost a key, it’s time to rekey the lock
- Any key owner misplaced or lost your keys, wallet, purse, or backpack
- You’ve gotten new roommates or new service people (maids, babysitter, dog walker, etc.) or anyone who had a key copy or access to your keys
If you are buying a new home, rekeying is a good safety option.
Your new home comes with a history, you never know who might have a key to your home. Safety should come first and rekeying the lock protects you and your home.
If you have rental property, it’s definitely a good idea to rekey the locks for safety.
When you change a lock, you or a locksmith remove the old locking door hardware and replaces it with new hardware. You’ll have all new keys and all new keys, but changing your locks can be expensive and isn’t always necessary. if your locks are old and wearing out, changing them will be a better option than rekeying them. The same goes if you want to replace your locks with more modern, more secure or updated electronic locks.
